Who are we?

Every Woman California is the official website of the Preconception Health Council of California. The name Every Woman California is meant to encompass not only woman but all people with the capacity for pregnancy and their partners. The site serves as a mixed-use platform for sharing preconception and interconception health, health care, sexual and reproductive health services and psychosocial well-being resources and information with the public and health professionals.

The mission of the Preconception Health Council of California (PHCC) is to engage individuals, communities, and health care organizations to optimize the health and well-being of individuals and their partners, leading to healthier infants and families.

History

Founded in May 2006, the PHCC is a statewide forum for planning and decision-making for the integration, development, and promotion of preconception health and health care.

In 2017 the PHCC joined forces with the Preconception Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network team, Supported by and within HRSA MCHB’s Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network on Infant Mortality (IM CoIIN) initiative, in developing, implementing, and disseminating a woman-centered, clinician-engaged, community-involved approach to the well-woman visit to improve the preconception health status of women of reproductive age, particularly low-income women and women of color.

For more information about preconception health and the Preconception CoIIN work, visit ShowYourLoveToday.com or BeforeandBeyond.org.

The PHCC has engaged stakeholders to develop a strategic plan to 1) increase awareness about health issues for individuals of childbearing age; 2) improve the availability of preconception health care services and increase access to these services, and 3) facilitate the adoption of a framework for individual’s health that acknowledges the importance of addressing health care across the lifespan and the impact of social determinants on health.

Goals and Objectives

The PHCC has established goals, objectives, and activities to implement the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Select Panel Recommendations for the Nation on Preconception Health and Health Care. The PHCC prioritizes issues through regular Council meetings and issue-specific workgroups, and provides direction for:

  • Integration of preconception health and health care in clinical and public health practice;
  • Promotion of key preconception health messages that address physical and psychosocial well-being to individuals of reproductive age in California.
  • Increasing access to preconception care to eliminate disparities in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.
